Entstehende Qualifikationsschrift – Kurzbeschreibung: This historical semantics project aims to analyse the uses of the concept of Vernichtung in the German-speaking world and beyond, and to trace its semantic shifts over a long period of time, from the beginning of the 19th century to Adolf Hitler’s arrival in power. My hypothesis is that this concept, used to designate the physical elimination of the designated enemy, has a double origin: not only in the field of biology and hygiene, but also in that of social sciences, warfare, and politics.
